Department Of Public Health

The Department of Public Health and Health Sciences emphasizes collaborative learning, equipping students with a rich understanding of the healthcare field and preparing them to excel in careers such as advocating for health policy, promoting health through education, managing health data analytics and leading collaborative health care teams. The department offers degrees at the associate, bachelor's, master's and doctorate levels. Health encompasses a wide range of careers, including many that do not involve direct patient care. When practitioners, caregivers, leaders and researchers come together to address complex health needs, healing is made possible. At Kesmonds International University, our Public Health Department (PHD) combine research with service and teaching with mentorship. They lead through their scholarship and community engagement, guiding students through the experience of identifying health needs and developing solutions. As students in the state's only comprehensive health sciences school, our students work alongside future leaders in a variety of fields ranging from nursing to physical therapy – developing essential collaboration skills so they can understand the big picture of health care and health teams. They graduate prepared to be educators and creative thinkers who promote health and help our health systems deliver high-quality, evidence-based care. The integrated approach used within the Department and across other Departments at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences provides many opportunities for our faculty and students to advance their interdisciplinary, basic and translational, research. Researchers and future students within the department have access to state-of-the-art research facilities and the necessary space to perform innovative research using cutting-edge analytical technologies that will undoubtedly lead to fundamental public health research output with clinical applicability. Our public health programs prepare students to be competent, future public health leaders.

What is Public Health?

Public Health is the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals. Common denominators of Public Health (PH) are:

  1. 1. Involvement of many disciplines which share systemic approaches to health and social care;
  2. 2. Focus is on entire populations rather than individual patients alone;
  3. 3. Disciplines involved in PH share strengths in a variety of methodological approaches (quantitative (epidemiologic, health economic), qualitative, mixed methods research & implementation science), all approaches central to tackling the main challenges of health care locally, nationally and internationally.

Mission

• We aim to promote the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities, based on local, national and global needs.
• We develop, implement and evaluate real-life measures in interdisciplinary teams to provide independent scientific evidence for maximal impact at all levels of decision-making.
• We train talents in health sciences with a commitment to excellence and knowledge circulation.
• The mission of the department is to provide world-class education and research training to the future researchers of the United Arab Emirates and to contribute to research findings and discoveries that lead to significant improvement in human health.

Vision

Educating future researchers in public health and epidemiology can be most effective through a comprehensive teaching program using interactive, problem-based learning approaches embedded within an Integrated Curriculum Model and a strong research program. A strong interdisciplinary focus with clinical applicability research program using state-of-the art technologies is a major driver of research innovation.
